Last November 22, 2021, was published in the Official Gazette “La Gaceta” the law to declare August as the historical month of Afrodescendence in Costa Rica, law number 10050, which decrees August 31 as a holiday in commemoration of the Day of the Black Person and the Afro-Costa Rican Culture. Reforming article 148 of the Labor Code and decreeing the following days as holidays:
Article 148- The following shall be considered holidays and, therefore, of mandatory payment: January 1, April 11, Holy Thursday and Good Friday, May 1st, July 25, August 15, September 15 and December 25. August 2nd, August 31st and December 1st shall also be considered holidays, but their payment shall not be mandatory.
The August 31st holiday will be joining the August 2nd and December 1st holiday as non-mandatory paid holidays. It also establishes that the celebration of the new August 31st holiday will be moved to the following Sunday in the years 2022 and 2023, being able to celebrate it the same day until the year 2024. This same document indicates that for the year 2022 the holidays of September 15 and December 1st will be moved to the first following Monday.
